Origins of the Pumpkin

Item # 73551
Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America dating back to 7000 B.C. Native Americans used pumpkins as a staple in their diets. They dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats, and used the seeds for medicine. By colonial times, pumpkins were being used in more familiar ways. Long strips were roasted and used as an ingredient for pie crust. The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. But it wasn't until Europeans brought the custom of carving and lighting pumpkins to ward off evil spirits that the pumpkin took on its most recognized form today.

This piece was retired July 16, 2001, and the mold will be broken and no further production of this piece undertaken.
