In the 2nd century BC, the Syrian-Greek regime of Antiochus tried to force the Jews away from Judaism, hoping they would assimilate into the Greek culture. Study of the sacred Torah was outlawed, and Judaism was threatened with extinction. A band of Jewish rebels led by Maccagee confronted the Syrian army and though vastly outnumbered, they drove the foreigners from their land. When they entered Jerusalem the Holy Temple was in shambles. They cleansed and rededicated it but could only find a day's worth of oil to light the menorah. Miraculously it burned for 8 days and to this day the observance of Hannukah celebrates the miracle.This item includes a gift box.
