In Spain Santa resembles one of the three wise men because Spanish children believe that the Three Kings bring presents to them at Epiphany. On January 5th, the Eve of Epiphany, children place their shoes on the doorstep. In the wee hours of the night, the Three Wise Men visit and leave gifts in them.

Santa is ringing a large bell to call the families to La Misa Del Gallo or The Mass of the Rooster. He carries a candle in his other hand, signifying the unusual tradition of Hogueras, observance of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter. The tradition is observed by people jumping over fires to win symbolic protection against illness. This fire-jumping is practiced primarily in Granada and Jaen.
