The first greeting card is said to have been designed by John Calcott Horsley. It was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole in1843. He wanted a card to be painted showing the feeding and clothing of the poor. A center panel displayed a happy family embracing one another, sipping wine, and enjoying Christmas festivities. "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You" was printed on the first card. Legend says Sir Henry didn't send any cards the following year, but the custom became popular and just three years after the English Parliament passed the Postage Act, it made it possible to send letters for a penny. Within 10 years, Christmas cards were the rage of England.
