Candy Cane Claus
The Candy Cane Santa uses a large candy cane like a shepherd's crook, honoring the humble shepherds who were first to worship the newborn Christ child. Stars dangle from his belt, representing the bright star that led the shepherds to Bethlehem and to the manger at the inn. There are many myths surrounding the candy cane. One legend has it that in 1670 the Cologne Cathedral choirmaster had sugar stick candies made and then bent into shepherd's crooks. He handed them out to the youngsters to keep them quiet during the long 'Living CrŽche' ceremony. The kitchen elves assist the Candy Cane Claus with making the candy canes out of sugar, syrup and red colored peppermint. They roll the candy into long ropes, then these treats are cut into equal lengths and then the tops are bent over. The Candy Cane Claus fills his sack with these bright red, pink and white peppermint treats that he is going to deliver to every house he visits. Into the stockings and shoes they go, giving the youngsters something sweet to eat. Along with decorating cookies, Santa decorates trees with them.
