Jan and Viki are having a wonderful Slovak Christmas Eve. After a big dinner of roast goose with dumplings, sauerkraut, kolaches and poppy seed cake, the children see, for the first time, the decorated Christmas tree with presents underneath. After opening gifts, playing games and singing carols, the tired but happy children dress in their warm winter coats and go to midnight Mass with their parents. Jan wants to bring his new horse pull-toy and Viki brings a little tree to set by the Christ Child's bed at the church. She can't, however, convince her parents to let her favorite Christmas present, Pooshka, the puppy.
