The poinsettia, the loveliest of Christmas flowers, is a gift from our neighbor to the south, Mexico. Legend tells us the story of a little boy who wanted to bring something to the Christ Child in the manger at church. He was sad because he was poor and had nothing to give. On his way to church, he saw a beautiful green bush and decided to pick a few branches to lay at the manger. As he broke off the branches, the bush sprouted bright red star-shaped flowers, which the boy brought to the newborn Babe. American botanist Joel Poinsett discovered the flower in 1825 during a visit to Mexico. He brought it back to the United States where it was cultivated and used commercially as the Christmas flower. The Poinsettia Angel brings a bouquet of red and pink poinsettia to the Christmas festivities as we, too, bring the flowers into our homes at Christmas time. Perhaps she will lay them at the manger of the Christ Child, just as another little boy did so long ago.
