Little Helper

Item # 155928
Final Issue Backstamp and Medallion

Everyone can use some assistance with the chores, and our Little Helper is happy to oblige. In fact, she's been pitching in tirelessly for the last 68 years. This appealing figurine was modeled by Master Sculptor Reinhold Unger back in 1937 and was originally referred to as "The Little Sister" or "Diligent Betsy."

As conceived by Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, "Little Helper" is lending a hand in the hen house. In the original artwork, you'll notice that her basket is filled with eggs, and some newly hatched chicks are chirping happily nearby. In rural Bavaria when Sister Hummel was a girl, this would have been a common household scene. Most country families kept a chicken coop, and fresh eggs would be gathered each morning. Often the task was delegated to a youngster. Typical of Sister Hummel, her sketch was based on the real life moments she witnessed around her.

When the sketch was interpreted by a Master Sculptor as a three?dimensional figurine, the basket was left empty, to be filled by your imagination. It's easy to envision the basket overflowing with laundry, brimming with flowers, or filled with just-picked apples.

Now, after nearly seven decades of devoted service, Little Helper is about to put her basket down and take a well-deserved rest. She's slated to retire on July 1, 2005. On that date, the molds will be broken, and the piece will never be produced again.

This is the perfect time to take home a "Little Helper" all your own. You'll be very happy to have her around the house!
