This piece is inspired by ancient Roman history. Bacchantes were the female followers taking part in Bacchanalians, the religious celebrations honoring the festival of the god Bacchus. The bacchantes were the source of inspiration of many works of classical art. The subject matter returned to art with the Renaissance, and was rendered by artists of the stature of Titian, Michelangelo and Rubens.
