Grosse Point, IL
Item # HL426 First lighted in 1873, Gross Point was built to serve Lake Michigan with a 2nd order Fresnel lens. The light beam shines 121 feet above lake level and has a range of up to 21 miles. This light station also employed fog signals to warn of the dangers of the coast. The first were steam sirens, which were replaced by steam whistles in the 1890's. The signal no longer graces the original buildings, but are included in the sculpture, as a nostalgic reminder of the past.
