There is not much known about the life of Jan Vermeer, born in Delft on October 31, 1632. His father was a dealer in silk and art as well as an innkeeper. In 1650, Jan Vermeer married Catharina Bolens, and was admitted to the Lucas Guild as a master in the same year. Vermeer and his wife had 11 children. His aim in painting was perfection, therefore he was not able to paint more than three or four pictures a year. His figures are mostly sunken in quiet domestic activities; they seem to be lost in meditation, almost completely shut off from the outside world.
