Everyone knows that any kind of gingerbread, fruit cake or spiced cake needs certain ingredients to taste just right and give it that warm holiday aroma.

Leave it up to Spice to have found that concoction thousands of years ago. Spice thought since brown was her favorite color and she loved anything that was SPICY, SPICY, SPICY, it must be an unusual mixture, never tried before and she tried many! From tree trunks and roots, acorns and earth, to fallen trees, leaves and twigs, she tried every combination. Spice never found just the right taste until one day she stumbled upon a small bushy tree that had a most unusual tree bark. It was very brown in color and had a very pleasing scent unlike any she had ever found before. Spice peeled off some, mixing it with sweet sap that she had tapped from another tree, and added shavings of a spicy root for just a little zing. The mixture was an instant success! Spice had found Cinnamon, Molasses and Ginger and what happened in her kitchen thereafter is baking history.

Over the years, her discovery led to famous creations that everyone is sure to recognize; Gingerbread Men, Gingerbread Houses, Fruit Cake, Plum Pudding, Cinnamon Buns, Spiced Cider, Pumpkin Pie, Raisin Spice Cookies and the list goes on.

So, the next time you smell that wonderful spicy blend of holiday baking coming out of the kitchen, just think of Spice and what she thought as she traveled the forest! "Sometimes the best things are right under your nose"
